It’s a party–a Mad Men BLOG PARTY–and YOU’RE invited!!!!
If you couldn’t tell already by my loves of alcohol and vintage fashion, I am a fan of Mad Men. I wasn’t always–I went through a phase of thoroughly hating Don Draper, that rakish fiend–and couldn’t watch it for a good year. But I got over it. What can I say? I’m a glutton for punishment.
When I graduated high school, I actually intended to go into marketing. I applied to Western New England College and was accepted into their program, but had a funding issue and put it off for 6 months. Good thing, too, because once I took my first business class, I realized it wasn’t for me. Still, I sometimes dream about what it would be like to work in that world. I can escape to an era of it through Mad Men. Gone are the days of day drinking in the office (and, thankfully, smoking like a chimney, chauvinistic treatment of secretaries, etc.), but it’s nice to fantasize every once in a while.
Sunday starts the last season of Mad Men, and I’m a little sad about it.
It’s probably time to move on, but I have a hard time saying goodbye to things I get attached to. Don and Pete, Betty and Megan… they’ll all disappear into the ether like they never existed. Their job is nearly done now. And me? I’ll only be left with one concern: does this mean the end of the fashion phase celebrating sixties style? I certainly hope not.
Every ending deserves its fond farewell, and that’s just what we’re doing today with the Mad Men Blog Party! A bunch of us got together, hosting our own little virtual potluck, to bid adieu to the Sterling Cooper crew. We hope some of these will inspire you for your own viewing party on Sunday.
Me? I went with alcohol, of course. An Old Fashioned. Because it’s timeless. Strong, yet subtle. So many layers, if you take your time to just live in the moment and let it unfold. We all could use a lesson in that.

Old Fashioned
Ingredients
- 1-2 demerera sugar cubes
- 1 dash blood orange bitters
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 2 ounces rye whiskey
- ice
- orange peel for garnish
Instructions
- Drop 1-2 sugar cubes in the bottom of an Old Fashioned glass (rocks glass) and pour the dashes of bitters on top.
- Mash with a muddler.
- Pour the whiskey into the glass and muddle/stir until the sugar is dissolved.
- Add ice (preferably a large ball or cube of ice, as this is a slow sipper and you don't want it to dilute too much) and garnish.
- Enjoy!
Love an old fashioned and well, you know it’s so appropriately named too. The bitters sound fantastic; you know I need some now, right?
This is just perfect for Mad Men!!!
Have to go with the big man’s classic here, right? 🙂
You’ve inspired me to give rye another try — nicely done!
I’m finding I like it much more than bourbon whisky. Go for it!
Ooh fancy! I’ve never seen demerera sugar cubes before. I’m sad about Mad Men ending too. It’s truly such a fantastic show and a phenomenal cast and crew. But I’d rather they end with the proper pomp and circumstance then go out with a limp fizzle like HIMYM =( Love your old fashioned, Carrie!
I agree! I’m not a fan of shows that keep dragging it out just because they’ve been successful. Go out while on time and exit gracefully!
OMG – best blog party EVER! I’m so sad the last season is upon us but at least we have that last season – can’t wait to check out all these recipes 🙂
I’m just giddy over all of these fantastic cocktails! My husbands drink of choice is whiskey when we are out and about but I don’t like it straight. Pinning this and looking forward to ordering one!
The show’s signature drink! It looks perfect! I think I learned how to make an old fashioned from that episode where Don makes one for himself and Conrad Hilton at Roger’s Derby Day party. So sad the show is coming to an end!
Megan Draper!
I don’t watch the show — but I like the hot redhead!
Peggy is my fave.
This is too cool. I love all the recipes for 50s/60s food!
