What would Easter be without the familiar sandy-sugar-crusted, sticky-sweet Peeps?
Well, just about any holiday these days. Peeps are no longer relegated to the once-a-year status they once suffered. Has this taken away from the specialness factor–that now that you can get them year-round, they are no longer something to be looked forward to? I say, “NO!” Because, my friends, Easter Peeps only come out at Easter. And there’s the brilliance in it.
Only in the spring can you acquire chick and bunny Peeps, in yellow, and pink, and purple, and blue, and green hues. Only then can you take those adorable, iconic figures and play with them to your heart’s content. Whether you’re squishing them between layers of graham crackers for Peeps s’mores, burying bunnies in brownie batter, or carrying out Peeps jousting in your very own microwave, none of this would be the same without the spring-time shapes we all know and love.
Sure, Peeps themselves don’t taste all that great. And I can whip up home-made marshmallows that blow them out of the water. But the nostalgia makes them worthwhile and guarantees them a place in my home, year after year.
This Easter, I added Peeps to a selection from our traditional Christmas platter. Nothing like mixing it up a bit! Peeps on haystacks–now birds nests–make a cute addition to the Easter table, and are really easy to throw together.

Peeps Nests
Ingredients
- 2 3- oz packages of chick Peeps or 1 3-oz package of chick Peeps & a bag of Cadbury mini eggs
- 1 6- oz container of Chow Mein noodles
- 8 oz unsalted/lightly salted dry roasted peanuts
- 5.5 oz bittersweet chocolate chips
- 5.5 oz butterscotch chips
Instructions
- Lightly spray the cups of a mini muffin pan and set aside.
- In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the bittersweet and butterscotch chips. Heat in the microwave at 50% power for 30 second intervals until completely melted. Dump in the Chow Mein noodles and peanuts, stirring until coated evenly. Drop by spoonfuls into the mini muffin cups, topping immediately with a chick Peep or Cadbury mini eggs.
- Pop the pan in the freezer or refrigerator to set fully. Will keep at room temperature for a few days or in the freezer for longer. The Peeps appear to be unharmed by the freezing process.
