This year’s garden is nowhere near as ambitious as last year’s. Since we knew we would be moving at any moment, considering we had been house hunting since early February, I had a hard time getting into the spirit of it. Anything I started would ultimately need to be relocated and taking on a task like that with an expansive collection did not seem all that attractive to me.
Regardless, I could not resist entirely the pull to make things grow. This is what’s in the container garden this summer:
- 1 rosemary
- 1 basil
- 1 cilantro
- 1 chives
- 1 oregano: Pizza Night
- 1 thyme: Pizza Thyme
- 1 mint: Mojito Mint
- 1 sage
- 1 windowbox of strawberries: Berri Basket, Everbearing
- 1 pot of sugar snap peas
- 3 blueberries: Elliot, Northland, Bluecrop
- 4 tomatoes: Marzano, Patio, Chocolate Heirloom, White Cherry
- 5 broccoli (the 6th was dug up by a critter)
The pineapple plant survived the year of my brown thumb–good to know, if you’re terrible about watering plants is that it does rather well left alone in the bathroom in a sunny window, even without water for weeks. It has split into a couple stalks that I should probably divide and put outside, but I haven’t gotten to it yet (June 19, 2012).
My daughter also repurposed a pumpkin seed found on the porch (could that really be from 2 years ago?) and planted it. Surprisingly, it has sprouted. We never got far enough along for pumpkins last year, but who knows. Maybe with relocation to a sunnier spot we’ll have better success this year.
