2012 Container Garden Cultivars

This year’s garden is nowhere near as ambitious as last year’s. Since we knew we would be moving at any moment, considering we had been house hunting since early February, I had a hard time getting into the spirit of it. Anything I started would ultimately need to be relocated and taking on a task like that with an expansive collection did not seem all that attractive to me.

Regardless, I could not resist entirely the pull to make things grow. This is what’s in the container garden this summer:

  • 1 rosemary
  • 1 basil
  • 1 cilantro
  • 1 chives
  • 1 oregano: Pizza Night
  • 1 thyme: Pizza Thyme
  • 1 mint: Mojito Mint
  • 1 sage
  • 1 windowbox of strawberries: Berri Basket, Everbearing
  • 1 pot of sugar snap peas
  • 3 blueberries: Elliot, Northland, Bluecrop
  • 4 tomatoes: Marzano, Patio, Chocolate Heirloom, White Cherry
  • 5 broccoli (the 6th was dug up by a critter)

The pineapple plant survived the year of my brown thumb–good to know, if you’re terrible about watering plants is that it does rather well left alone in the bathroom in a sunny window, even without water for weeks. It has split into a couple stalks that I should probably divide and put outside, but I haven’t gotten to it yet (June 19, 2012).

My daughter also repurposed a pumpkin seed found on the porch (could that really be from 2 years ago?) and planted it. Surprisingly, it has sprouted. We never got far enough along for pumpkins last year, but who knows. Maybe with relocation to a sunnier spot we’ll have better success this year.
