When I was first approached about trying Naked Jay Vodka, I wasn’t sure. Another whipped cream flavored vodka? Weren’t there enough of them already? I figured I’d give it a shot, but I wasn’t expecting much. It wasn’t until the samples arrived that I realized what I was getting myself into. You see, not only does Naked Jay Vodka make unflavored and Whip Cream booze, but they also offer something a bit unique–Big Dill Vodka. Yup. Dill pickle flavored vodka. Naked Jay isn’t a one trick pony.
It took me some time to build up the courage to try it though. Not only was the idea of consuming a drink with dill pickle essence reason enough to give me pause, I had only the one 50ML bottle and, so far as I know, no local source to get more. This was, quite literally, a one-shot deal. I would be going all-in and I didn’t want to mess this up.
So I started with the Whip Cream instead. Familiar territory. Combining 1 1/2 ounces of Naked Jay Whip Cream with 1/2 ounce Frangelico, I shook them over ice and poured into a shot glass. Then I licked my hand, sprinkled some sea salt on it, and prepared to be amazed. Taking it tequila style, I sucked down that Chocolate Covered Pretzel…and wished it was a martini instead. YUM. That was absolutely delicious! And enough for 2 shots, so I helped myself to the rest of it. Smooth, salty, and sweet, there was no burn, just pure enjoyment. I could see this becoming part of my normal repertoire.
Bolstered by this success, I moved on to the unflavored Naked Jay vodka. I decided to combine it with cranberry juice for something between a cocktail and a shot. 1 ounce of Naked Jay vodka + 2 ounces of 100% juice cranberry juice in a mini dessert-style glass. We’re real fancy here. It’s a nice little sipper without going crazy. As for the vodka, again, real smooth. It must be that quadruple distilling. I could sip this all night long.
But it was time to move on to Big Dill. And if you’re going to go with something like dill pickle, you have to go big, or go home. I selected Naked Jay’s recipe for the Naked Jay Bomb. I figured it was something my friends could appreciate, with their affinity for Jägermeister and all. In a cocktail shaker over ice, I combined 1 1/4 ounces Naked Jay Big Dill with 3/4 ounce Jägermeister, then poured into a shot glass. I knocked it back…and it tasted like the essence of skunk. It was not good. It wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever tasted, but it wasn’t a butterflies and rainbows experience either. Not to be dissuaded, I took in what was left of the shooter bottle and was equally unimpressed. I have never felt more like a girl. Again, it was smooth, lacking the burn that’s there with some inexpensive vodka options, but the taste was just not right. Or at least not something I really wanted to drink. The pickle aftertaste was not unpleasant, but I can’t imagine having a hankering to drink this unless I were pregnant with some crazy craving–and then, of course, it would be the wrong thing to do.
Ultimately, while I really enjoyed Naked Jay Vodka’s unflavored and Whip Cream varieties–the Whip Cream quite possibly becoming my favorite option of all that I have tried, surprisingly!–the Big Dill did not impress me. It screams different just for the sake of being different. Perhaps it’s a great alternative if you’re of the Bloody Mary loving type, but seeing as I tend not in that direction, it didn’t wow me. In fact, the whole skunk thing–which, I must say, the smell of skunks is not completely offensive to me–turned me off. It’s an interesting novelty, but no more than that. Stick with the other two and you’ll be golden.
Naked Jay Vodka is an American-made vodka manufactured by the Sazerac Company, based in New Orleans, LA. Their vodka is distilled four times for a smoother taste. It is available in a limited market right now, but hopefully, the Whip Cream and unflavored will be coming to a package store near you soon!
- 1½ ounces Naked Jay Whip Cream
- ½ ounce Frangelico
- sprinkle sea salt
- 1¼ ounces Naked Jay Big Dill
- ¾ ounce Jägermeister
- In a cocktail shaker, combine the Naked Jay Whip Cream and Frangelico over ice.
- Shake and strain into 2 shot glasses.
- Lick hand and sprinkle sea salt on it.
- Lick the salt then take the shot.
- In a cocktail shaker, combine the Naked Jay Big Dill and Jägermeister over ice.
- Shake and strain into 2 shot glasses.
- Knock back and enjoy...
